Now that Congress has passed the historic $2 trillion stimulus package to help the American public and the US economy fight the devastating effects of COVID-19, those in need are anxious to get relief checks. Unfortunately, cybercriminals are also ready with scams to steal your private information to cheat you out of the relief money coming your way. The details for distribution of relief funds are still being worked out, but the Federal Trade Commission shared these facts about the program to help you avoid identity theft and other potential losses as you await payment.
Here are a few basic security tips to consider:
- Checks are not yet being distributed – do not believe anyone who tells you they can help get your money at this time.
- You will not need to provide your Social Security number, bank account or credit card numbers to get your payout.
- You will not be asked to pay anything upfront to get your relief money.
- If you are contacted by anyone trying to perpetuate this type of scam you can contact the Federal Trade Commission.
